About Angela Johnson
Angela Johnson, born on June 18, 1961 in Tuskegee, Alabama, is an acclaimed children’s author known for her compelling works focusing on African-American families. Her notable books include The First Part Last (2004), Heaven (1999), and Toning the Sweep (1994), all of which have received the prestigious Coretta Scott King Award.
Prior to gaining recognition as a writer, Johnson won the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award for her first picture book Tell Me a Story, Mama published in 1991. She also had the opportunity to be mentored by established author Cynthia Rylant while working as a nanny for her children.
A significant aspect of Johnson’s writing style involves depicting the history and character of her home state of Alabama. Despite being born in Tuskegee, she spent most of her youth in Windham, Ohio.
