About Amy Lowell

Amy Lowell (1874-02-09) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning imagist poet from Brookline, Massachusetts. Known for her free-verse works such as “What’s O’Clock” and “East Wind,” Lowell wrote earlier poetry collections including “Men, Women and Ghosts,” “Sword Blades and Poppy Seed,” and “Can Grande’s Castle.” Prior to achieving fame as a poet, she enjoyed a prominent socialite status, was an avid book collector, and traveled frequently abroad. In 1912, she published her debut poetry collection titled “A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass.” Amy Lowell’s rumored romantic relationship with actress Ada Dwyer Russell led to speculation that it inspired the erotic poems in her collection entitled “Pictures of the Floating World.” Her brother Abbott Lawrence Lowell served as President of Harvard College.
