About Amanda Cross
Amanda Cross was an American mystery writer, academic, and feminist. She was born Carolyn Gold in New Jersey on January 13, 1926. Cross is best known for her Kate Fansler books, which center around the adventures of an English professor. In addition to her fiction works, she also authored non-fiction books such as Reinventing Womanhood and Writing a Woman’s Life.
Cross graduated from Wellesley College in the late 1940s and went on to teach English at Columbia University for over thirty years. She published her mystery novels under the pen name Amanda Cross.
Her husband, James Heilbrun, was a professor at Fordham University and they had three children together. Sadly, Amanda Cross (Carolyn Heilbrun) passed away by suicide in 2003.
