Alisa Weilerstein was born on April 14, 1982, in New York. She is a renowned classical cellist and recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant. Weilerstein gained recognition for her award-winning performance at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and for her captivating interpretation of composer Lera Auerbach‘s 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano at the Caramoor International Music Festival.
Her musical journey began at the age of four when she embarked on formal cello training, leading to her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at just thirteen years old. Notably, she holds an undergraduate degree in Russian history from Columbia University in New York City.
Born into a family deeply rooted in music, Alisa is the daughter of pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and Cleveland Quartet violinist Donald Weilerstein. Her brother Joshua Weilerstein is a conductor and violinist with whom she formed the Boston-based chamber ensemble known as the Weilerstein Trio.
