About Alice Duer Miller

Alice Duer Miller (July 28, 1874 – August 22, 1942) was an American poet, writer, and suffragist. She is best remembered for her works including Forsaking All Others, The White Cliffs, and Are Women People? In addition to her poetry, she gained recognition for her 1916 novel Come Out of the Kitchen which was adapted into both a play and a film.

Mrs. Miller hailed from New York City where she was born into a prominent family who had lost its fortune by the time Alice began her studies at Barnard College. To support herself through college while pursuing degrees in astronomy and mathematics; she turned to writing and publishing. A noteworthy trivia about her lineage is that one of her ancestors – William Duer – signed the U.S. Articles of Confederation in 1778.

Alice married Henry Wise Miller in 1899 with whom she spent some years living in Costa Rica before returning to their home in New York City with their young son.
