About Alice Coachman
Alice Coachman was born on November 9, 1923, in Albany, Georgia. She is best known as the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal, achieving this feat in the high jump at the 1948 Olympics. Prior to her Olympic success, Coachman was a standout youth athlete with notable achievements at the AAU level.
Coming of age during a time of segregation in the American South, Coachman faced significant barriers in pursuing her athletic dreams. Denied opportunities to train for or compete in organized sports events due to racial discrimination, she instead improvised her training by running barefoot in fields and on dirt roads.
Despite missing what would have been her prime years for Olympic competition due to cancellations caused by World War II (the 1940 and 1944 Olympics), Coachman persevered and ultimately secured an Olympic gold medal.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Alice Coachman went on to support young athletes and retired Olympic veterans through the establishment of the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation.
