About Alice Ball
Alice Ball was an American chemist born on July 24, 1892 in Washington. She is best known for developing an oil extract that was the most effective known treatment for leprosy until the 1940s.
Ball achieved several firsts during her lifetime; she was not only the first woman but also the first African-American to receive a Master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.
Prior to her groundbreaking work, Ball graduated from Seattle High School in 1910 and went on to earn Bachelor’s degrees in both Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Washington.
Tragically, Ball passed away at a young age under mysterious circumstances. Speculation suggests that she may have died from chlorine poisoning as reported by an article in the Pacific Commercial Advertiser.
Beyond her own achievements, it is worth noting that Ball came from a family with a rich lineage. Her grandfather, James Presley Ball, was a renowned photographer while her father and mother were also accomplished individuals – her father being a lawyer and newspaper editor named James and mother Laura working as a photographer.
