About Alice Adams
Alice Adams (born August 14, 1926 in Virginia) was an American novelist and academic best known for her short story collections including Beautiful Girl (1979), After You’ve Gone (1989), and The Last Lovely City (1999) as well as her novels such as Medicine Men (1997) and Superior Women which became a bestseller in 1984. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1946 before working briefly as a secretary prior to publishing her first novel, Careless Love, in 1966.
Despite once receiving advice from her psychiatrist to stay married and stop writing, Adams chose to ignore both suggestions. She spent much of her life living between Virginia and North Carolina with her husband Mark Linenthal and their son Peter after which she raised him alone following their divorce.
