About Alexa Canady
Alexa Canady is an American neurosurgeon born on November 7, 1950, in Lansing, Michigan. In 1981, she made history by becoming the first African-American woman to specialize in neurosurgery.
Before gaining recognition as a groundbreaking neurosurgeon, Canady was nominated for the National Achievement Scholarship Program at a young age in 1967.
In addition to her medical accomplishments, she has received various awards including the American Medical Women’s Association President’s Award in 1993 and the Distinguished Service Award from Wayne State University Medical School in 1994. She was also honored with induction into the Michigan Woman’s Hall of Fame in 1989.
Canady is the daughter of Elizabeth Hortense and Dr. Clinton Canady, Jr., who respectively served as a former national sorority president and dentist.
