About Alberta Gay
Alberta Gay was born on January 1, 1913, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She is best known as the mother of legendary R&B singer and songwriter Marvin Gaye. Sadly, she witnessed her famous son’s tragic murder in 1984 at the hands of his father (and her husband), Marvin Gay Sr.
Before gaining fame as the mother of a music icon, Alberta had a troubled childhood. Her father fired a non-fatal shot at her mother and she was not allowed to attend school until she reached the age of a typical third-grader.
To support her family, Alberta worked as a housekeeper in Virginia and Maryland. She divorced Marvin Gay Sr. after he fatally shot their son following an argument. The nearly fifty-year marriage between Alberta and Marvin produced three other children: Jeanne, Frankie, and Zeola.
