About Alana Jane Nichols
Alana Jane Nichols is an American Paralympic athlete who was born on March 21, 1983, in New Mexico. She is best known for being the first American female to win gold medals at both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. With a career spanning five Paralympic appearances, she has earned six medals.
Prior to her athletic career, Nichols graduated from the University of Arizona in 2006 with a degree in education before obtaining a master’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Alabama two years later. At 17 years old, she suffered a spinal cord injury while attempting a backflip on her snowboard which led her to transition into adaptive sports.
In addition to her achievements as an athlete, Nichols has also served on the board of various organizations including EspnW, The Women’s Sports Foundation and The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Her parents are Susan Nichols and David Nichols, and she has three siblings: David James Nichols, Julianne Nichols, and Jovan Heusser. Alana Jane Nichols is married to Roy Tuscany.
