About Agnes Martin
Agnes Martin (March 22, 1912) was a Canadian-born painter known for her abstract expressionist works, particularly her watercolor landscapes. Some of her most notable pieces include the 1973 portfolio “On a Clear Day,” consisting of 30 serigraphs, and “Loving Love” from 2000, which sold at Christie’s for $2.95 million.
Prior to gaining recognition as an artist, Martin attended the University of New Mexico and Columbia University in New York. It was during her time at Columbia that she developed a passion for Asian thought as a code of ethics after attending lectures by D.T. Suzuki, a renowned Zen Buddhist scholar.
In addition to her artistic achievements, Martin received the National Medal of Arts in 1998. She was born in Macklin, Canada and raised in Vancouver before relocating to the United States in 1931 and becoming a citizen in 1950.
