Agathe Habyarimana, born on November 1, 1942 in Rwanda, is a political figure who gained prominence as the former wife of Juvenal Habyarimana, the President of Rwanda from 1973 to 1994. She played a significant role in the country’s politics leading up to the tragic Rwandan Genocide.
Prior to her marriage and involvement in politics, Agathe was born into one of Rwanda’s influential Hutu families. She later met and married Juvenal Habyarimana.
In a noteworthy turn of events, Agathe was arrested by the French government in 2010 due to her alleged participation in the Rwandan Genocide. Her husband’s assassination in 1994 marked an end to their marriage.
