About Agathe Backer-Grondahl
Agathe Backer-Grøndahl (born December 1, 1847) was a Norwegian composer known for her contributions to the golden age of Norwegian music and for teaching numerous future pianists. She initially adhered to European pianistic and stylistic ideals from the 1850s but later adopted an impressionistic approach, becoming the first Norwegian impressionist.
Prior to gaining fame, she studied with Theodor Kullak from 1865 until 1867 and with Richard Wuerst in Berlin at the Akademie der Tonkunst. She married singing teacher and conductor Olaus Andreas Grøndahl in 1875, and their son Fridtjof Backer-Grøndahl became a pianist and composer.
Music critic George Bernard Shaw declared her as one of the greatest piano artists of the 19th century.
