About Achala Sachdev
Achala Sachdev, born on May 3rd, 1920 in Peshawar, India, was a renowned movie actress regarded as the “Mother of Bollywood.” Over her 74-year career, she appeared in more than 250 films and is best known for her role as Balraj Sahni’s wife in the Bollywood movie Waqt. Some of her other notable films include Mera Naam Joker, Chandni, and Nine Hours to Rama.
Before entering the film industry, Sachdev worked as a radio jockey at All India Radio in Lahore before continuing her career at All India Radio in Delhi after the partition of India. Her on-screen debut took place in 1938 with the film Fashionable Wife.
In addition to her prolific acting career, Sachdev was also known for her philanthropy. She donated her home in Pune to the Janseva Foundation and received care from Dr. Vinod Shah until the end of her life. Achala Sachdev was married to Clifford Douglas Peters and had a son named Jyotin.
