Abigail Austen, born on December 8, 1964 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a journalist known for being the first officer to undergo gender reassignment while serving in the British Army. Her public legal battle over her forced resignation led to formal policies allowing transgender soldiers to transition while serving. She also set Scottish legal precedents for transphobic crimes during her time as a police officer in Glasgow.
Before fame, Austen studied at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen and enlisted in the British Army to hide her gender dysphoria. After four years of service with the Royal Irish Rangers, she left and trained as a video journalist. She worked with Scottish Television and often reported from war zones due to her military background.
Austen’s story inspired the documentary “Sex Change Soldier” released in 2008. Despite growing up in a conservative Christian family, she was disowned after beginning her gender reassignment.
