Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (October 26, 1874) was a Rhode Island-born art collector and patron who played a pivotal role in the establishment of New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Born into a prominent family, she grew up in Providence as the daughter of senator Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich and the sister of future congressman Richard Steere Aldrich. After graduating from Miss Abbott’s School for Young Ladies in 1893, she embarked on an extensive European tour.
In 1901, Abby married financier John D. Rockefeller Jr., becoming a member of the influential Rockefeller family. The couple raised five sons and one daughter.
