Clorinda Matto Turner (1852-09-11) was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, and advocate for women and indigenous peoples. She is known for her controversial, politically-themed novels such as “Aves Sin Nido,” “Herencia,” and “Indole.” Prior to gaining fame as a writer, she studied history, physics, and philosophy at the Escuela Nacional de Educandas.
In 1900, she was sent into exile by the dictator of Peru who considered her literary work as a challenge to his regime. After her husband’s death in 1881 left her bankrupt, she supported herself by working as a newspaper editor.
