Bell Hooks, born on September 25, 1952 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was an American author, feminist and social activist. Her real name was Gloria Jean Watkins. She is best known for her book “Ain’t I a Woman?: Black Women and Feminism” and has written over 40 published books throughout her career.

Before gaining recognition as an author and activist, Hooks studied at Stanford University before earning her M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her writing often focused on themes such as race, capitalism, gender oppression, and class domination.

In addition to her work for adults, she also wrote multiple children’s books. Growing up in a working-class family with five sisters and one brother influenced much of her work.
