About Zitkala-Sa

Zitkala-Sa, born on February 22, 1876, in Yankton, South Dakota was a prominent Native American writer, musician, teacher and political activist of Yankton heritage. She is best known as one of the co-founders of the National Council of American Indians. Prior to delving into activism, she pursued academic scholarship with a focus on music. During her graduation years she gained recognition for delivering a powerful speech advocating for women’s rights.

Notably, Zitkala-Sa co-composed the first American-Indian opera and showcased her musical talents alongside her advocacy work. In terms of her personal life background; she was born on a reservation in South Dakota to a Yankton mother and French father. Unfortunately during her childhood years, her father abandoned their family leaving them to navigate difficult circumstances alone. Later in life she married Raymond Bonnin in 1902 and together they had a daughter.
