Yvonne Rainer, born on November 24, 1934 in California, is a renowned performance artist, filmmaker, dancer and choreographer. She is best known for her experimental work and has been mistakenly associated with minimalist art due to her unique approach. Rainer was introduced to dance and film at an early age and went on to advocate the return of dance to its most basic elements through her influential 1965 written piece “No Manifesto.” This concept was embodied in her iconic dance piece “Trio A” from 1966. Growing up in Northern California, she was raised by self-proclaimed “radical” parents of Polish Jewish and Italian descent.
