About Winnie Byanyima
Winnie Byanyima (born January 13, 1959) is a Ugandan politician and aeronautical engineer. She is widely known for her role as the director of Oxfam International, an international confederation of charitable organizations focused on the alleviation of global poverty. Additionally, she has served as the executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV.
Prior to her career in politics and humanitarian work, Byanyima earned her bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Manchester. She then went on to work for Uganda Airlines before gaining attention as Uganda’s ambassador to France starting in 1989.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Byanyima co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2015. Notably, she married Kizza Besigye in July of 1999 and has five siblings
