About Wendy Sharpe
Wendy Sharpe (born February 25, 1960) is an Australian painter known for her portrait work. She has achieved acclaim as the winner of the Archibald Prize and the Sulman Prize.
Sharpe shares her artistic creations with a broad audience through online platforms, boasting a following of 5,000 on Facebook and 10,000 on Instagram. Prior to gaining recognition as an artist, she honed her skills by illustrating in high school and participating in school plays. After attending Seaforth Technical College and later Alexander Mackie College, she embarked on her career as a professional painter.
In an unprecedented move in 1999, Sharpe was appointed official war artist during Australia’s military involvement in East Timor through the Australian War Memorial in Canberra – marking the first time since World War II that a female artist had been chosen for this role.
Hailing from Sydney, Sharpe divides her time between her hometown and Paris. Her father Alan Sharpe was a writer and historian. Furthering their lineage of creativity and mystique are maternal relatives Bessie Fishman and Ann Fishman who were followers of Russian occultist Madam Blavatsky; both also possessed psychic abilities.
Sharpe’s partner is fellow Australian artist Bernard Ollis.
