About Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau

Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau was an American-born Parisian socialite, known for being the subject of John Singer Sargent’s famous painting “Portrait of Madame X.” Born on January 29, 1859, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she came from a prominent family with European Creole heritage. Her mother had noble French ancestry and her father served as a major in the Confederate army during the Civil War until his death at the Battle of Shiloh.

After the war, Virginie and her mother moved to France where she was educated and integrated into high society in Paris. In 1884, Sargent unveiled his portrait of Madame X at the Paris Salon. The daring pose and attire caused a scandal, which initially damaged Sargent’s reputation but eventually led him to greater success while Virginie faded from public view.

Virginie was married to Pierre Gautreau, a banker and shipping magnate with whom she had a daughter named Louise Gautreau. Known for her hourglass figure and fair complexion enhanced by lavender-colored powders and henna-dyed hair, she captivated many suitors during her lifetime.

Despite initial infamy surrounding “Madame X,” both John Singer Sargent and Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau left lasting legacies within art history as an artist’s muse captured in controversy.
