Velma Barfield (born October 29, 1932) was a criminal from South Carolina. She became the first woman to be executed by lethal injection in the United States and the first woman to be executed after the 1976 resumption of the death penalty.
Barfield developed an addiction to drugs after a surgery led her to suffer chronic and severe back pain. Although she was convicted of killing one person, she confessed to killing six individuals throughout her criminal history.
She was married twice, and both of her husbands passed away under suspicious circumstances.
