About Sylvia Earle
Sylvia Earle is an award-winning oceanographer and lecturer who was born on August 30, 1935, in Gibbstown, New Jersey. She became a National Geographic explorer-in-residence in 1998 and is considered an expert on the impact of oil spills.
Earle earned a bachelor of science degree from Florida State University in 1955 before obtaining a master of science and doctorate of philosophy degree from Duke University. In addition to her academic accomplishments, she has been called upon to lead several research teams during various oil spills due to her expertise.
In 1998, Time Magazine named Earle its first Hero for the Planet. Additionally, she set the Deep Rover depth record tied by Graham Hawkes, whom she was married to from 1986 until 1992. She also founded the Deep Ocean Exploration and Research organization, which her daughter Elizabeth later took over. Earle has a son named John as well.
