About Sophie Theresa Pemberton
Sophie Theresa Pemberton (born February 13, 1869 in Victoria, Canada) was a Canadian painter known for her portraits and landscape paintings. She is considered to be British Columbia’s first professional female artist. In 1899, she was the first Canadian woman to win the Prix Julian from the Academie Julian for her portraiture.
Before gaining recognition as an artist, Pemberton traveled to London in 1890 and studied at the South Kensington School of Art and Slade School of Art. By the late 1890s, she was enrolled at the Academie Julian. Upon her return to North America, she continued her studies in San Francisco.
Pemberton taught painting to local female artists in Victoria, Canada and after having her work exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, became the first artist from British Columbia to receive international acclaim.
In 1905, she married Canon Arthur Beanlands , a widower and Anglican priest with whom she later traveled to India before his death in 1917. Three years after Beanlands’ passing,she married Horace Deane-Drummond.
