About Soong Ching-ling

Soong Ching-ling, born on January 27, 1893 in Shanghai, China, was a prominent politician known for her role in China’s politics. She was the second wife of Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the 1911 revolution that established the Republic of China. Ching-ling was often referred to as the mother of modern China and served as Vice President of China from 1959 to 1975.

Prior to her political career, Ching-ling was elected to the KMT Central Executive Committee after her husband’s death. Following this incident and after being expelled from the party along with other Communists in 1927, she spent some time in Russia before returning permanently to China in 1931.

Ching-ling held several political positions including Vice Chairperson of the Central People’s Government and Chairperson of the People’s Republic of China. She was one of six children born to Charlie Soong in Chuansha, Pudong, Shanghai.
