About Sonia Guajajara
Sonia Guajajara is a Brazilian activist born on March 6, 1974. She is known for her advocacy and activism on behalf of the environment and indigenous communities, particularly her work with the Guajajara people.
In addition to her environmental and indigenous advocacy, Guajajara made history as the first indigenous person to run for vice-president of Brazil, representing the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL).
Before embarking on her activist career, she studied at an agricultural college in Minas Gerais before continuing her education at the Federal University of Maranhao. Her dedication to advocating for indigenous rights has been recognized through prestigious honors such as being named to the Brazilian Ordem do Merito Cultural and receiving a medal from Maranhao state.
Guajajara was raised in a small village in the Amazonian rainforest within Maranhao state.
