About Shonka Dukureh
Shonka Dukureh, born on September 3, 1977 in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a blues singer and musician. She gained recognition for her role as Big Momma Thorton in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film “Elvis,” where she delivered a memorable performance of the hit single “Hound Dog.” Her co-star Olivia DeJonge praised Shonka’s rendition as a “spiritual experience.”
Tragically, Shonka passed away on July 21, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee while working on her studio album “The Lady Sing the Blues.” Before her rise to fame, she pursued a career in education after earning her master’s degree from Trevecca Nazarene University and an undergraduate degree in theater from Fisk University.
In addition to her acting roles, Shonka lent her vocals to tracks by artists like Nick Cave and Smoke Dza and appeared in rapper Doja Cat‘s music video. She left behind two children.
