About Shirley Muldowney
Shirley Muldowney is an American racing pioneer, born on June 19, 1940 in Burlington, Vermont. She is best known as the “First Lady of Drag Racing” and was given the nickname “Cha Cha.” Muldowney became the first woman to receive a license from the NHRA.
Prior to her fame, she started racing at a young age, often skipping school to race on the streets of Schenectady, New York. Her passion for racing led her to pursue it as a career.
In 1984, Muldowney experienced a serious crash that resulted in injuries to her hands, pelvis, and legs. Despite this setback, she made a remarkable comeback in later years and continued racing until 2003.
Muldowney’s family life includes marrying her first husband Jack Muldowney at the age of 16. He played an instrumental role in building her first dragster.
