About Sherley Anne Williams
Sherley Anne Williams was an African-American poet, author, and academic born on August 25, 1944 in Bakersfield, California. She is best known for her poetic and prose works including The Peacock Poems and Working Cotton. Additionally, she published a non-fiction work entitled Giving Birth to Brightness: A Thematic Study in Neo-Black Literature.
Williams studied English at California State University in Fresno before pursuing graduate study at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As a Fulbright grant recipient in 1984, she traveled to Ghana to further her academic pursuits.
She grew up with three sisters in the Fresno housing projects after the death of her father from tuberculosis when she was just eight years old.
