About Selma Lagerlof
Selma Lagerlof was a Swedish author born on November 20, 1858 in Marbacka, Sweden. Known primarily for her Wonderful Adventures of Nils book series, she also wrote other literary works such as The Changeling and The Outcast along with numerous novels, short stories, plays, and memoirs.
Before gaining recognition as a novelist, Lagerlof taught at a girls’ school in her native Sweden during the 1880s and 1890s before publishing her first novel, The Story of Gosta Berling in 1891. In 1909 she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Lagerlof was the fourth child born to Erik and Louise Lagerlof and had an intimate relationship with fellow writer Sophie Elkan beginning in the mid-1890s.
