About Saya Sakakibara
Saya Sakakibara is an Australian BMX rider born on August 23, 1999, in Gold Coast, Australia. She began her BMX career at the age of four after being inspired by watching her older brother compete. After relocating to Sydney in 2007, she joined the South Illawarra BMX Club.
Sakakibara has achieved significant success in BMX Supercross events and has represented Australia at the World Championship level. In recognition of her talent and dedication to the sport, she was selected to compete for Australia at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as part of the national team.
Notable achievements include winning a silver medal in Junior Elite BMX Supercross at the 2017 World Championships and being honored with AusCycling’s Female BMX Racing Rider of the Year award in 2020.
Outside of her professional career, Sakakibara is involved in a relationship with Romain Mahieu, who secured victory at the 2023 BMX World Championships held in Glasgow.
