About Sarah Helen Whitman
Sarah Helen Whitman (January 19, 1803 – June 27, 1878) was a nineteenth-century American poet and writer associated with the Transcendentalist and Spiritualist movements. She was born in Rhode Island and became known for her poetic work, including her 1853 collection titled Hours of Life.
In her early adulthood, Whitman became involved with spiritualism and the occult, regularly holding weekend seances at her home. Her interest in transcendentalism was sparked by attending a lecture given by Ralph Waldo Emerson in Boston.
Whitman grew up in Providence, Rhode Island and at twenty-five she married author and editor John Winslow Whitman.
