About Sarah Orne Jewett
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-09-03) was an American novelist and short story writer from Maine. She is known for the coastal Maine settings of her books, including The Country of the Pointed Firs (novella), A Country Doctor (autobiographical novel), and A White Heron (short story collection). In addition to her novels, she also wrote poetry and children’s books.
Jewett attended Miss Olive Rayne’s school and later studied at Berwick Academy. At just nineteen years old, she published a short story in the esteemed Atlantic Monthly magazine.
She is associated with the literary movement known as local color. Jewett grew up in Maine as the daughter of a physician. Though she never married, her extremely close friendship with fellow author Annie Fields may have become romantic following the death of Fields’ husband.
