Sarah Fielding (November 8, 1710) was an English children’s author known for writing the first-ever English-language novel specifically targeted at children. In 1749, she published her famous work The Governess, or The Little Female Academy. Fielding is also noteworthy for a sentimental novel titled The Adventures of David Simple, which was aimed at older readers and published in 1744.
Fielding began her career as a writer due to financial constraints that prevented her from marrying. Many literary critics believe that she contributed to several early works of her author brother.
In addition to being a fiction writer, Sarah Fielding was also a biographer who wrote The Lives of Cleopatra and Octavia in 1757.
Born in England, Sarah was the younger sister of satirical dramatist and novelist Henry Fielding and the older half-sister of social reformer John Fielding. Their parents were Edmund Fielding and Sarah Gould; Sarah grew up in Bath with siblings named Ursula, Beatrice, Edmund, Anne, Henry,and John.<
