About Sarah Balabagan
Sarah Balabagan is a Filipino woman who gained international attention after being imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates for the 1994 stabbing death of her employer, Almas Mohammed al-Baloushi. She claimed that he tried to rape her and she acted in self-defense.
Balabagan was born on March 8, 1979, in the Philippines and grew up in a poor family with thirteen siblings. At the age of 14, she moved to the UAE to work as a domestic helper for a widower with four sons. Following the incident with her employer, she faced a series of legal trials which eventually led to her sentencing to one year’s imprisonment and 100 strokes of the cane.
In 1996, Sarah Balabagan returned to the Philippines and continued to speak out about her experience. Her case sparked debate about migrant workers’ rights and garnered widespread media coverage both domestically and internationally.
