About Sara Mardini
Sara Mardini is a Syrian activist known for her refugee advocacy work. Born on July 17, 1111 in Damascus, Syria, Sara’s life story was depicted in the 2022 Netflix biographical film, The Swimmers. The film chronicles her and her sister Yusra Mardini‘s escape from Syria in 2015, during which they swam from the Aegean Sea to Germany.
Before gaining notoriety as an activist, Sara and her sister honed their swimming skills at their local pool. Upon arriving at a refugee center in Germany, they continued to pursue their passion for swimming by joining a local swim club.
Despite her love for swimming, Sara was forced to quit due to a shoulder injury. In addition to facing personal challenges, she also encountered legal issues. In 2018, while advocating for refugees in Lesbos, Greece, she was arrested on charges including spying and belonging to a criminal organization. After more than three months of detention, Amnesty International labeled the charges as unfounded.
In terms of family background,Sara has another sister named Shaed and parents who worked as a physiotherapist (her mother) and swim coach (her father).
