About Sarah Josepha Hale
Sarah Josepha Hale, born on October 24, 1788 in Newport, New Hampshire, was an early American writer known for her work as a novelist. She is most famous for authoring the beloved nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and producing a poetry volume titled “The Genius of Oblivion.”
Before gaining recognition as a writer, Hale worked as a grade school teacher and eventually transitioned into the role of a successful editor. In 1827 she published her first novel entitled “Northwood: Life North and South.”
Beyond her literary contributions, Hale also played an influential role in establishing Thanksgiving as an officially recognized holiday within America. On October 23, 1813 she married David Hale and together they had five children: David, Horatio, Frances, Sarah, and William.
