About Sandra Herold
Sandra Herold (born May 8, 1938) was a woman from the United States known for owning a chimpanzee that went on a violent rampage in February 2009. Her 200-pound domesticated chimp Travis mauled Charla Nash’s face, leaving her clinging to life.
Before fame, Sandra and her husband purchased Travis for $50,000 from a breeder. In December 2009, Connecticut state prosecutors decided not to hold her criminally responsible for the attack. A $50 million civil suit filed by Charla Nash’s family was still pending at the time of her death.
Her husband, Jerome Herold, died from cancer in 2004. Her only child, a daughter, died in a car accident in 2000.
