About Ruth L. Kirschstein
Ruth L. Kirschstein was a pathologist known for her research on the safety of the polio vaccine. Born in New York on October 12, 1926, she received her medical degree from Tulane University in 1951.
Throughout her career, Kirschstein received superior service awards from both the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and the United States Public Health Service. She was also a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and served as acting director of the National Institutes of Health in 1993 and again from 2000 to 2002.
Kirschstein was married to pathologist Dr. Alan S. Rabson for 59 years.
