About Ruth Brown
Ruth Brown (1928-01-12) was a renowned R&B singer born in Portsmouth, Virginia. She gained fame for her hit songs including “Teardrops from My Eyes,” “Mambo Baby,” “Lucky Lips,” “Oh What a Dream,” and “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean.” Additionally, she achieved success in the Broadway show Black and Blue, earning a Tony award for her performance and contributing to its Grammy-winning cast recording.
Early in her career, Brown performed with Lucky Millinder and Duke Ellington. Notably, her advocacy for musicians’ royalties and rights led to the establishment of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
She grew up with six siblings in Portsmouth, Virginia, and went on to marry three times – Jimmy Brown (later discovered to be already married), Earl Swanson, and Bill Blunt – while raising two sons.
