About Ruth Asawa
Ruth Asawa (January 24, 1926) was a Japanese American sculptor known for her unique wire sculpture works. Born in California, she gained recognition with the nickname “fountain lady” due to her notable fountain creations.
Asawa received the esteemed Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects and is celebrated for her innovative contributions to the art world.
Prior to achieving prominence, she pursued education at Milwaukee State Teachers College and Black Mountain College.
Her most renowned work includes the “Andrea” mermaid fountain located in Ghirardelli Square.
Ruth Asawa married architect Albert Lanier, with whom she had six children.
