About Rui Machida
Rui Machida (born March 8, 1993 in Hokkaido, Japan) is a professional basketball player who currently plays as a point guard for the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. Prior to joining the Mystics, she played for the Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Japan Basketball League and has also represented Japan in international competitions.
She began her professional career with the Fujitsu Red Wave in 2011 and made her women’s international debut at the 17th Annual Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in 2014. Notably, Machida won a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics as part of the Japanese Women’s national team. During that Olympic tournament, she set an Olympic record for assists during a semi-final game against France.
Off court, Machida is popular on Instagram where she has over 190,000 followers. She was born and raised in Hokkaido and currently resides with her wife Momoka.
