About Rigoberta Menchu
Rigoberta Menchu, born on January 9, 1959 in Laj Chimel, Guatemala, is a noted novelist and activist. She gained international recognition for her efforts to raise awareness of the suffering endured by Guatemalans during the Civil War that took place from 1960 to 1996. Her acclaimed works include “I, Rigoberta Menchu” and “Crossing Borders.”
Before achieving fame as an author and activist, she grew up in a poor indigenous family near El Quiche and attended a Catholic boarding school. Later in life, she became the president of a pharmaceutical company that provided low-cost drugs.
In addition to being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Menchu received the distinguished Order of the Aztec Eagle. Born into an indigenous K’iche’ family in Laj Chimel to father Vicente Menchu, her heritage deeply influenced her activism and writing.
