About Regina Benjamin
Regina Benjamin (born October 26, 1956) is an American doctor who served as the United States’ eighteenth Surgeon General in 2009. Before her appointment, she had a distinguished career in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service.
Benjamin attended Xavier University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham before opening a medical practice in Alabama. She later pursued an MBA degree at Tulane University and transformed her practice into the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic, which serves underprivileged communities in eastern Alabama.
As Surgeon General, Benjamin advocated for healthcare reform based on personal experiences with her family members’ health issues – including her brother’s death from HIV, her mother’s passing from lung cancer, and diabetes-related complications that led to her father’s death. Her efforts highlighted failures within the healthcare system to prevent and treat common diseases.
