Princess Masako, born on December 9, 1963 in Japan, is the Crown Princess of Japan and Japanese Red Cross Honorary Vice President. Before her marriage into the Imperial House of Japan, she studied at the University of Tokyo’s law school and had intended to pursue a career with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As the daughter of Hisashi Owada, a Japanese diplomat, Princess Masako spent her early years in Moscow, New York City, Tokyo, and Boston. She graduated from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1985 with a degree in economics.
Princess Masako married Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito in the summer of 1993. The couple welcomed their daughter Aiko, Princess Toshi, in late 2001.
In the early years of the 21st century, Princess Masako faced emotional and adjustment disorders that led to her absence from many public events where she would normally be expected to appear as Crown Princess.
