About Phyllis Frelich
Phyllis Frelich (born February 29, 1944) is a deaf American actress best known for winning the Best Actress Tony Award in 1980 for her lead role in the Broadway production of Children of a Lesser God.
Frelich was born to deaf parents and grew up as the oldest of nine children, all of whom are also deaf. She made history by becoming the first deaf actor to win a Tony Award. In addition to her work on stage, she also performed a sign language interpretation of the national anthem sung by Jewel at Super Bowl XXXII.
She married Robert Steinberg, and they have two children who are fluent in American Sign Language like their parents.
