About Phoebe Gilman
Phoebe Gilman (born April 4, 1940) is an American-born children’s author and illustrator known for creating strong female characters in her works. She was born in The Bronx, New York.
Gilman studied at both Hunter College and the Art Students League of New York before traveling to Europe while making a living as a painter. In 1984, she published her first children’s book, The Balloon Tree.
Some of her most popular works include Something From Nothing (1992) and Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs (1987). In 1993, she won the Ruth Schwartz Award for Best Children’s Book for her work Something From Nothing.
Gilman died of leukemia in her early sixties. She is survived by her husband, Brian Bender, and three children.
